Chapter Eleven
You’re quiet today.”
Kira looked up from where she sat at the kitchen table to find Seth’s eyes fixed on her. They reflected a healthy amount of curiosity, which shouldn’t surprise her. Whatever else she was, quiet wasn’t normally on the list where her brother was concerned.
“Oh. Yeah, I guess. Just a Sunday morning thing.” She smiled as Seth settled himself across from her, stretching his legs out under the table and giving her a kick.
She’d arrived without plans, expecting nothing more than a lazy day together. Emma had run out to grab some muffins, leaving her to make a cup of coffee, be lazy, and replay Fitz’s kisses another few thousand times in her head.
Kira took a sip of her coffee to cover her smile. He might be quiet and well mannered, but the man knew what he was doing. It was amazing enough that she found somebody she’d been so instantly attracted to here, a man with whom she seemed to be perfectly compatible on a physical level. But to discover that they clicked so well on a personal level, at least now that any work-related friction was removed . . . it was almost too good to be true.
He’d been so cute at Big Al’s. Even when his paladin was being mauled by a giant spider. She wouldn’t have expected it from a guy in a Ninja Turtles sweatband, but Big Al was a pretty devious Dungeon Master. He’d killed almost the entire party. And it had been hilarious. Maybe next time we can—
Kira pushed the thought away before she could finish it. Wanting to see Fitz so much made her nervous. She wasn’t supposed to care. Wasn’t that the point of a fling? Flustered, she grasped around for a more comfortable topic—any topic—to focus on.
“So I have to admit, Harvest Cove has some pretty nice perks,” she informed her brother. “Great apartment, great motorcycle, muffins . . . you may have to pry me out of here with a crowbar,” she said.
Seth smiled. “Knew you’d like it once you quit complaining about the temperature.”
“I’m never done complaining about the temperature,” she replied dryly. “And I’m too poor to move to Hawaii, so that’s probably not changing. Besides, I’d just find something new to complain about. Like sharks.”
They both laughed at that. He’d teased her about her aversion to open water for years, but they both knew that if either of them was going to get an arm gnawed off, it was going to be him.
“You’d get used to it if you stayed, you know,” Seth said. The statement was so out of the blue that it took her a minute to process what he meant. When she finally did, Kira looked at him closely and couldn’t detect a single sign that he was anything less than serious. If I stayed. Stay here? Me?
“Seth,” she said. “Come on.”
“No, I mean it,” he said, and she saw the stubborn look she recognized very well, as it was one she often wore herself.
